I Made You A Mixtape is a feature I’m going to run regularly where, as the title suggests, I’m going to make you a mixtape. Or maybe a guest will make you a mixtape. Or maybe we’ll put up a collaborative mix. But then, shouldn’t it be called “We Made You a Mixtape?” you ask. Hmm. Maybe you’re right. I’m really just thinking out loud. I am going to go ahead and guess that you have figured out by now that I haven’t really thought this through. Whatever. Deal with it. I made you a mixtape and this is how you treat me?
Sorry. Sidetracked. Point is, I Made You A Mixtape. This time through, I thought I’d share a recording from a gig I DJ’d a few years back at Tex Mex Connection where I used to have a weekly residency (long time ago when I was fab…). Every Thursday night, I used to spin what the kids call “the hot beats.” Copious amounts of drunken requests, but occasionally, I would do my best to sneak in little nuggets here and there for the heads. The people who were really listening. I DJ with the thought process of “Some for you…. some for me.” This is why I’m some people’s favorite DJ and the most hated of others. See, I strive for that moment where someone hears something for that first time, tilts their head, smiles and starts bumpin’. An excited “Yo…. what is this?!” is one of my favorite phrases to hear whenever I’m behind the decks. Or the throwback. The cut someone hasn’t heard in awhile. When that recognition kicks in and they can’t stop but jam out, maybe even give a little, “Yo! That’s My Jawn!”
